Maths Projects

Dear Parents and Guardians,

HOMEWORK PROJECTS –HOMEWORK YEAR PLANNER ON REVERSE

Students are set homework according to their homework timetable. Most subjects set one homework each week, whilst Art and Music will set tasks on a fortnightly basis. Please check that your child has written this timetable into their planner.

At Guilsborough we have looked at homework provision in detail over the last year and discussed issues arising with parents and students. As a result of those discussions we feel that students need more experience of longer pieces of work in preparation for the coursework requirements in Years 10 and 11. We have therefore put in place additional project based homework in Years 7, 8 and 9. These assignments are designed to teach the planning skills needed for GCSE work. They are also intended to be imaginative and engaging, with options which appeal to all types of learners. Assignments often link to using ICT, and students who need to can access computers in the Learning Centre at lunchtimes.

Every half-term all students will have a ‘major' and a ‘minor' homework topic set, which will include clearly signposted work for more able students and support sheets and extra resources for less able. Full details are on the school website. Major projects will be set over a full 6 weeks; minor projects should take about 3 weeks. The outcomes should be strong pieces of work which the department can use to agree levels for students. Rewards and letters of praise will be given for best work and best efforts.

Any student who completes the daily homework early can go onto these tasks and spend more time on the extension work set for the more able. If at any time you feel that your son/daughter has completed their daily homework and their project work to an acceptable standard and is not being challenged by their homework please don't hesitate to contact the teacher in the subject concerned for additional work. We don't intend that students should be working every minute of the day and night and some very conscientious students may try to do too much work on the projects – or students may be struggling with the work. Please let the tutor know immediately if this is the case and they will be able to help plan the work at a more reasonable pace and speak to subject teachers to arrange more time or support.

We hope students will enjoy their homework projects and find working on them a rewarding experience.

Yours sincerely,

Christine Staley

Headteacher
