FAMOUS MATHEMATICIANS

Write about a famous mathematician: for example,

Isaac Newton, Euclid, Hypatia, Alan Turing, Srinivasa Ramanujan, Cathleen Morawetz

You will have three weeks to produce this work.

FIRST WEEK - PREPARATION AND RESEARCH

1) Choose one mathematician.

2) Research different sources of information. They could be:

a) an encyclopaedia, reference maths book, history book

b) school website

c) the internet

3) When reading, try and find out:

- date and place of birth of the mathematician

- where they spent their childhood and about their families

- what work they did when they grew up

- what their main achievements were

- interesting facts or events from their lives

- what they discovered in maths, theories and other contributions

TIPS:

To search on the internet you could try

  • searching for a mathematician by typing their name
  • typing ‘Mathematicians'
  • use these links:

http://www.edu.pe.ca/kish/Grassroots/math/famous.htm

http://www.yahooligans.yahoo.com/School_Bell/Math/Mathematicians/

http://www.allmath.com/biography.php

To use the school website go to:

-          departments -          maths -          pupils -          help and resources -          links.

(this sentence needs to be checked and possibly removed!)

SECOND WEEK- WRITING UP

4) Write down what you have found out – one paragraph for each of the lines above.

GUIDELINES: There should be about three pages of hand written text. You are allowed to add as many diagrams, drawings and sketches as you wish on top of these three pages. Some students may prefer to print out details and highlight the relevant sentences.

5) Extension – write one or two paragraphs answering the question: how has this mathematician influenced our lives today?

THIRD WEEK – PRESENTATION

6) Students MUST prepare a poster showing what they have found out about their chosen mathematician. This can simply be an A4 sheet.

Students SHOULD also prepare a presentation to the class outlining what they have discovered.

Students COULD also use ICT to deliver their presentation, or even write a poem, song or rap about the work of their mathematician.

EXTENSION

You must find an example of a piece of mathematics your mathematician is famous for and show this to the rest of the class. This could be done using work-sheets, the white board or a power point presentation if arranged in advance with the teacher.

Science

Year 7 Space Project

Introduction

It is the year 2098. You work for the Intergalactical Travel Agency. This agency is interested in providing information about various holiday packages to the planets in our solar system.

The Task

Your job is to produce a brochure to promote your planet as the "Number One Travel Destination In The Universe".  Every planet has something to offer the adventurous traveller.   Information to use in your brochure could include such things as the best spots to visit and the best time of year, what to pack, activities available (i.e. climbing, swimming, snorkelling or exploring). You will produce a travel brochure to show to the other members of the Agency.  Include some background information about the physical characteristics of your planet, any mythology behind your planet's name, and any exploration that has been done of your planet.

Resources

To complete this project, you will need to go to the following sites on the Internet:

Astronomy for Kids is a very elementary site with basic information about each of the planets.   It includes a colour picture as well.  It's fairly simple, but a good place to start

The Nine Planets: A Multimedia Tour of the Solar System gives an overview of the history, mythology, and current scientific knowledge of each of the planets and moons in our solar system.   There is an enormous amount of information here, so you will have to be selective.

Views of the Solar System presents a vivid multimedia adventure unfolding the splendour of the Sun, planets, moons, comets, asteroids, space missions, and spacecraft using a vast archive of photographs, scientific facts, text, graphics and videos.  "Views of the Solar System" offers exciting exploration and educational enjoyment of the solar system, and beyond.

Windows to the Universe has general information on the solar system and the universe. You will also find information on myths, art books and films, space missions, people, and data.  Go to the table of contents by clicking on "Enter this site".  The "real time" pictures of earth from satellites are really excellent, but slow to load.

Learning Resource Centre

Speak to Mrs Plowman, or use OPAC to find out titles of suitable books to help you with your project.

You can also book the computers in the LRC at breaktime and lunchtime, to search the internet using the sites above.

You can also use several CD-Roms about the solar system available from the LRC, and Encarta is installed on the LRC computers.

Science Department resources

There is a box of books on the solar system in the Science department – speak to your science teacher to find out how you can borrow these.

Format

Your brochure can be produced on a computer, using Word or Publisher, or it can be hand-written on paper. Ask your teacher if you need any lined or plain paper. It should include pictures and diagrams as well as writing, to help the reader decide if they want to travel there. It should include a front cover, a contents page, and a list of all the resources you have used at the back of the brochure.

Weekly breakdowns

Week

Task

1

Choose a planet to write about. Find out information on the weather, seasonal information, and physical characteristics of your planet.

2

Find out the distance to your planet from the Earth. Investigate the best method of travel, and any problems that might be encountered.

3

Provide information on the history of the space exploration of your planet.

4

Research the mythology about your planet.

5

Design an alien that could live on your planet. The alien would have to be adapted so that it could survive there – use your imagination!

6

Begin to write your brochure. It should include all of the information you have found out already. It should also include advice for the traveller, such as the best spots to visit and the best time of year to go, what to pack, and what activities are available (i.e. climbing, swimming, snorkelling or exploring – these depend on the characteristics of your planet!)

7

Finish writing your brochure, focusing on the presentation, and hand in your project to your teacher. Use the check-list below to make sure you have included everything.

Check-list:

To achieve Level 4, you will have included information about:

  • Average temperature
  • If your planet has a day and night
  • If you planet has seasons
  • How long it takes your planet to orbit the Sun
  • How far away from the Sun your planet is
  • What the surface of your planet is like
  • How far away from the Earth your planet is

To achieve Level 5, you will have included information about:

  • All of the above, plus:
  • How you could travel to your planet
  • The history of the space exploration of your planet
  • The mythology about your planet
  • Aliens that could live on your planet

To achieve Level 6, you will have included information about:

  • All of the above, plus:
  • The adaptation the aliens would have for living on your planet
  • The best method to travel to your planet (with reasons why it is the best method)
  • Any problems which may be encountered getting to your planet (e.g. life on a space shuttle, asteroids etc)
  • The brochure will be written in a suitable format, providing information for the reader, and include pictures and diagrams

Conclusion

By completing this project, you will have:

  • Demonstrated your knowledge of a planet in our solar system through its physical characteristics, its relationship to the Earth and the Sun, its mythology, and the history of its space exploration.
  • Completed research related to a planet in order to provide information for your final project.
  • Communicated clearly and effectively the information you have organized in your research.
  • Demonstrated the ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated the effective use of technology.
ICT

Year 7 ICT Project

Technology in the Home

Your minor project for this half term is ICT-based. You are going to produce a report about the computerised technology found in your home.

•  Look around your home for computerised appliances which allow you to INPUT instructions, PROCESS the instructions and provide you with some sort of OUTPUT. Some examples you may have at home include: DVD player, VCR, Burglar Alarm, Microwave, Washing Machine, iPod, Sky Plus, CD player, answering machine…

•  For each appliance, you need to find out:

•  how you INPUT instructions (control panel, remote control etc.)

•  what PROCESSING takes place

•  how does the appliance OUTPUT information for you? (LCD display, print-out, sound, graphic display etc.)

•  Present the information in a slide show. Take a look at the IOP presentation and the example of the microwave for what you could/should do. You should aim to cover around six different appliances, but you could do more, if you want. The final product should take around five minutes to view and can include sound and even video clips.

•  Your presentation should have an introduction to ‘set the scene' and a conclusion at the end to summarise what you have found out.

Your Questions Answered

How long will it take?

You should take around two to three hours to complete the project, from start to finish. This is just a rough guide though; you may take longer if you want to do a really good job of it!

How should I produce it – on paper, or on a computer?

Your report should be a slide-show presentation, created using Power Point or similar presentation software. If this is a problem because you don't have a computer at home, speak to your teacher to agree on a different format.

Can I use photos in my presentation?

Yes! Photos are a good way to make your presentation better. You could use a digital camera to take your own pictures, find photo's of your appliance on the Internet or even scan photos using a scanner. Remember to make sure any images you use are appropriate to the rest of the content on the slide.

How will my work be assessed?

You can send your finished presentation to your ICT teacher by e-mail, or put it onto a floppy disc, CD or memory stick and give it to your teacher. Your teacher will decide on a grade by looking at:

•  accuracy of information presented

•  spelling and grammar

•  appropriate use of images and colour

•  appropriate fonts and size of text

•  appropriate use of animations, sound and video

When do I have to hand it in?

You should have around three weeks to complete this project. Your ICT teacher will give you a deadline.

Who can I ask for help?

Ask your ICT teacher if you're not sure what to do. If you need extra help about the appliances in your home, or would like to know more about them try websites like:

What's in it for me?!

Well, you'll learn a lot about the ‘gadgets' in your home and how they work for starters! You'll also be learning all about the way technology affects your daily life, without you even knowing it. In addition to that, you'll be getting good practice at using Power Point; remember all the important points about design, audience and appropriate content that you've already studied in ICT lessons this term! Oh, and if that lot isn't enough for you, there's also a prize of a box of chocolates to the best project from each class and a special prize for the best one overall.

Healthy Eating – Do you know your onions?

Year 7 homework project – Spring Term

Major project – to be competed over 6 weeks

Learning Objectives :

To increase student awareness of healthy eating options

To support students in practical application of   healthy eating options

•  Every student MUST produce   work showing awareness of healthy food choices

•  Most students SHOULD be able to use this knowledge to create a healthy week's menu for teeenagers   and a poster advertising healthy eating principles

•  Some students COULD   produce   an informative leaflet which we can use to help Year 7 students understand healthy eating choices

Week 1

Students should choose 2 healthy foods and 2 unhealthy foods.   They need to research which ‘food groups' these belong to (for example, carbohydrates, proteins, sugars) and explain how they help or harm our health

Weeks   2 and   3

Students should create a healthy menu of meals for a whole week – including breakfast, lunch and dinner. The menus should have a healthy overall balance of food groups, without too many unhealthy foods.   Students should indicate on their menus which foods are most healthy (for example they good use red, amber and green highlighters to show which are the healthiest, or least healthy foods).   The menus have to appeal to teenagers (not bran and cabbage soup, for example!)

Tutors will give a date for these to be handed in and some tutor time will be used to share menus. The group will select the best 3 choices to go forward for prizes

Weeks 4 and 5 ( may be completed over the Easter holidays)

Students should EITHER   create a LARGE poster   with a healthy eating message which we can display in school

OR create an information leaflet (one sheet of A4 folded into 3 folds) aimed at new Year 7 students coming to our school next year, informing them about healthy food and giving them suggestions of ways to keep eating healthy foods ( eg lunchbox suggestions, advice on using the canteen)

Tutor groups will select the best 3 posters and leaflets and     these will go forward to be judged by Mrs Hale and Mrs Palmer .

REMEMBER there is   a chance to win a prize of a portable DVD player or HMV vouchers   this term by using your HEALTHY EATING CARD in the canteen.

Art - Stamps
