Learning Resource Centre

Speak to Mrs Plowman, or use OPAC to find out titles of suitable books to help you with your project.

You can also book the computers in the LRC at breaktime and lunchtime, to search the internet using the sites above.

Encarta is installed on the LRC computers.

Format

Your newsletter can be produced on a computer, using Word or Publisher, or it can be hand-written on paper. Ask your teacher if you need any lined or plain paper. It should include pictures and diagrams as well as writing, to help the reader understand the information. Try to avoid copying information directly from the internet or from books; you should not include anything that you don't understand. You should also hand in a list of all the resources you have used to create your leaflet (references).

Weekly breakdowns

Week

Task

1

Choose an energy resource to write about. Find out where the energy comes from, what it is used for and when it was invented.

2

List the advantages of using your energy resource – is it readily available? Is it environmentally friendly? Is it renewable? Is it cheap?

3

List the disadvantages of using your energy resource – does it contribute to global warming? Is it expensive? Is it non-renewable? Does it depend on the weather? Is it difficult to obtain? Can it affect your health? Does it produce any waste?

4

Research ways of overcoming the problems you have identified with using this energy resource.

5

Find examples of where this energy resource is currently produced in the UK , and where it is used. Evaluate the efficiency of your energy resource in transferring energy, and compare it with the other energy resources available.

6

Produce your newsletter, focusing on presentation. Hand your leaflet in to your teacher.

Check-list:

To achieve Level 4, you will have included information about:

  • When your energy resource was first used / invented
  • A list of advantages and disadvantages of the energy resource

To achieve Level 5, you will have included information about:

  • All of the above, plus:
  • The energy transfers that take place when the energy resource is used
  • What the energy produced is used for
  • Evidence that you have looked at more than two resources

To achieve Level 6, you will have included information about:

  • All of the above, plus:
  • A comprehensive list of advantages and disadvantages of using the energy resources and how it compares to the advantages and disadvantages of other energy resources
  • Ways of overcoming the problems you have identified with using this energy resource.

To achieve Level 7, you will have included information about:

  • All of the above, plus:
  • Examples of where this energy resource is currently produced in the UK and where it is used.

Geography

Humanities Homework Project:   Geography – a flavour of GCSE

Topic: Depth study of one African Country

What to do:

During your work in your study of The EconomIc World in Humanities, you are looking at the things that lead to differences between countries. You should now have a good understanding of the causes of these differences.

Your project is to carry out a detailed study of one African Country (excluding South Africa). The aim is to show as many aspects as possible about your country, but you must include detail about economic activities in the country.

Your work should focus on clear and interesting visuals, including maps, graphs, diagrams and images. lt can be presented as either:

  • A detailed (A2 sized) wall display
  • A report using A4 paper
  • A Powerpoint, Flash or Quicktime presentation
  • A mini-website (you should only choose this option if you are good at webpage layout - otherwise the visual quality of your work might not be that good).

You need to do the following things as you start your work:

  • Study the mind map plan that summarises differences between countries. Use this to guide you in what you need to find out about your chosen country.
  • You need to cover both physical and human features of the country, but you should go into more detail about the human features. Through your work, you should aim to show how your African country is poorer than other parts of the world.

  • Carry out preliminary research to find out which African country you are going to study. You need to make sure you are able to access enough information sources to complete your work well.
  • Think carefully about how you will present information to make your work both visually attractive and clear. You must present geographical information clearly. You must at least one graph, map and diagram yourself - you could use IT to create these.
  • If you have access to the internet, you should visit the Y9 Humsweb webpage which contains a lot of resources to help you with this work.
  • You should spend at least 2 hours a week on this project.

Schedule: Week

1 Research . Find as many information sources as you can on your chosen country covering as many of the key indicators as possible.

2 Plan your report and begin to present information. You have the following options about how much detail you aim to include, but you should aim to produce your best work:

3-5 Present your work using your chosen methods. Your work must include at least one hand drawn map at the start to locate your chosen country and to identify its main features.

6 Hand in

Your work on your country -

Must: Cover one physical aspect e.g. landscape or climate and two human aspects e.g. population and economic activity, of your country

Should: Cover 2 physical aspects - climate and landscape and 3 human - population, economic activity.

Advanced Option: Covera range of physical and human aspects of your chosen country. Use the additional resources on Humsweb to explain how history has worked to create poverty in your African country.

Assessment:

Your work will be peer assessed (judged by you and your classmates). Therefore, at the beginning of this project, you will agree three criteria that your work will be judged on.
